Teavana Perfect Tea Kettle Review

Teavana Perfect Tea Kettle

I looked quite a bit around the internet to find a tea kettle for our induction cooktop. Le Creuset tea kettles were getting bad reviews (rusting!). Others had poor whistles or funny tastes, per the reviews. This kettle is stainless steel, inside and out. Nothing to rust or chip off. I was concerned that its handle would get hot, but it did not. About 800 cc of water boiled in a minute or two, but the handle was cool to the touch. The whistle is a classic whistle, perfectly adequate. So far, I am pleased with this purchase.

Capresso H2O Pro Programmable Cordless 56-Ounce Water Kettle with Variable Temperature Control Review

Capresso H2O Pro Programmable Cordless 56-Ounce Water Kettle with Variable Temperature Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After seeing warnings against another variable temperature kettle (branded by a major tea vendor) that's totally hit-or-miss by 20 degrees, I was cautiously hopeful that Capresso's H2O Pro would avoid that problem.
When this kettle arrived, I decided to play the skeptic and put to test it. Would it really hit 140F on the dot? Just a little above/below? A lot?
After a short brew time, *two* other thermometers (one analog, one digital) agreed with the kettle: 140.0F on the dot!
This is one excellently designed variable-temperature kettle! This kettle has now brought about more casual tea drinking. No more do I have to watch a stove or electric kettle like a hawk and stop it at the right temperature!
Temperatures are programmable in 10F increments from 110F (warm on the wrist) to 212F (boiling). I like to make tea with 140F (a bit over scalding) as I use plenty of Japanese green tea that is temperature-sensitive. And I love how it can also be programmed to keep the same temperature continuously (or not, as you please).
I only have 2 snags with this kettle:
- At the temperatures I like, increments in 5, 2 or 1 degree make better sense than 10 degree increments.
- When taking the kettle off its base, it resets its temperature defaults to 212 (boiling). I'd prefer that it automatically kept my preferences while I'm pouring the occasional cup throughout the day. But that's just me. Turning it to the preferred temp again is just a few thumb-wiggles away (which makes the 10-degree increments a balance of convenience).
Since no other variable-temp kettle I can find on the market is better than this one, these are just would-likes and don't detract from what I feel is a kettle at the head of its market.
5 Stars.

Attractively housed in stainless steel with a polished chrome finish, this electric hot-water kettle makes a striking presence on any kitchen counter or buffet. Use it to quickly bring 16 to 56 ounces of water to a rolling boil for making anything from tea, instant coffee, and hot cocoa to oatmeal, instant soup, noodles, and more. The kettle lifts off its 360-degree swivel base for easy filling at the sink or for graceful serving without the hassle of a power cord; it can also be returned to its power source from any direction--great for right- and left-handed users. Integrated into its generous stay-cool handle, the unit provides an illuminated digital display and simple push-button controls for choosing from a variety of programmable settings, including 11 temperature-control settings (from 110 to 212 degrees F), various keep-warm settings (from 110 to 190 degrees F), and extended boil settings (from 3 to 20 seconds). For safety, the kettle shuts itself off automatically once the water has reached a boil (or after the elapsed extended boil time) or if water needs to be added, which prevents it from boiling dry. Other highlights include a water-level window with min/max markings, a simple lid with push-button release, a micro-filter spout that keeps particles out of the cup, and cord storage when not in use. The cordless electric kettle measures 9 by 6 by 9-1/2 inches.

Chef's Choice 675 International Cordless Electric Hot Pot Review

Chef's Choice 675 International Cordless Electric Hot Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just recieved this kettle to replace a rival hotpot. The Rival lacked an on-off switch. It also gave off some strange tastes and some say stainless is better than plastic that way.
I reheat coffee and heat canned goods in the hotpot as it's easier for me than the range and the wide opening on this hotpot allows one to clean it easily though the lid won't lift as far as you'd like.
On recieving this kettle my first thought was the base was of light gauge plastic - seemed a little cheap. But I suppose that's ok if it turns out to be durable. Next I was amazed that the stainless vessel was of lighter gauge than I expected. This is probably all good though. Some reviewers of the other stainless kettles remark that they are heavy and get 'dangerously' hot. This one is actually reasonably light to maneuver. And if I boil 2 cups of water - turning it off myself which is before the automatic shut off - the stainless is just warm at the top; not really hot. If it doesn't wear out this is fine for my needs. Also - it looks like the picture. I give it one star for the appearance of the polished stainless, but that is subjective. Have to admit though, it cleans good.
3 year later: Still works fine and I've fired it up every day 3-5 times. V Fine.

This electric tea kettle boils 1.75 litre of tap water in exactly 8 minutes, then automatically shuts itself off. It is saving us time and cooking fuel, and saves itself from boiling dry and self-destructing. I highly recommend it for those who need a couple pots of boiling water every day. So far(in a month or two), neither the heating plate in the bottom nor the glass pot itself have crusted up with mineral deposits and the water tastes pure and clean.

With 1500 watts of power and a concealed heating element, this electric kettle quickly boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water, producing hot water for tea, hot chocolate, instant soup, and more--faster than a stove or microwave and using 50-percent less energy than with an electric stovetop. See at a glance how much water remains and when water's about to boil thanks to the unit's contemporary design that combines brushed stainless steel with heat-resistant glass. The kettle lifts off its 360-degree swivel power base for cordless pouring and can be set back down on the power base in any direction. For added convenience, it provides a comfortable soft-touch handle, a one-handed push-button lid opening for easy filling at the sink, an illuminated on/off switch, a clearly marked water gauge, and an adjustable-length power cord that stores in the base. Safety features include automatic shut-off once water reaches a full boil, dual boil-dry protection, and a cool-touch base and lid-lock. Chef's Choice 688 SmartKettle Cordless 1-3/4-Quart Electric Kettle Review

Chef's Choice 688 SmartKettle Cordless 1-3/4-Quart Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So far, I am very pleased with my SmartKettle. It heats fast, it is pretty accurate, and it doesn't leave a funny taste in the water. With the fully adjustable temperature it works great for any kind of tea. It pours easily without spillage, and the top opens wide for easy cleaning.
There are a few things that keep me from giving it a perfect score though:
- There is no physical power off switch. There is a button to start/stop heating, but no physical switch to turn off the unit. You have to unplug it if you don't want to keep the BRIGHT display on 24/7. Not a big deal, but a power switch on the unit wouldn't have cost much and would have made it a bit more convenient.
- There is no way to adjust the volume of the alarm beeps. It can be a bit loud when brewing a cup at 5am.
- The minimum water level for safe brewing is supposed to be 16oz, I've found that you need to fill it closer to 32oz or the unit gives a low water level error and won't turn on. Again, not a big deal, just something to note.
Even with these minor quirks, it is still the best adjustable-temperature electric kettle that I have used.
****UPDATE****
After owning this kettle for 4 months, it began acting strangely. The thermometer would never reach 212 degrees, even though the water inside was clearly boiling. The temp reading would stop at 208, but the kettle was set for 212, so the water would just keep boiling. Eventually it would shut off with an error. I used it sparingly after this as it seemed like a potential hazard. After 3 more months it randomly caught on fire one day. It wasn't even in use at the time. Had I not been in the kitchen to hear the sparking and smell the smoke, I might not have a house right now. I will not be buying another.
****UPDATE 2****
I was contacted by a representative of Chef's Choice who assured me that this was a unique occurrence and not an accurate representation of the quality of their product. In fact, they asked that I send my unit back so they could investigate. They replaced my SmartKettle and the new unit is working perfectly so far. I feel a lot better about using the product now that I know the company stands behind the quality of their products, and will go out of their way to make things right for those who have had problems.

Quickly heat up to 1-3/4 quarts of water with this advanced electric kettle. The unit can be used to either boil water or heat it to the ideal and precise temperature desired with an accuracy of 2 degrees F--perfect for preparing temperature-sensitive teas like white, green, oolong, and herbal. In addition to tea, the kettle comes in handy when making instant coffee, hot chocolate, hot cereal, instant soup, and more. With 1500 watts of power, it heats water faster than a microwave or stovetop and uses 50-percent less energy than with an electric stovetop. Advanced electronics and a smart microcomputer detect the boiling point and shut the kettle off automatically once water reaches a boil, so there's no need to worry about water boiling away. Even more, its "keep warm" mode maintains the desired temperature until it's time to pour. The kettle lifts off its 360-degree swivel power base for cordless serving and can be set back down on the power base in any direction. For added convenience, it provides a concealed heating element, an LED temperature indicator, a beeper alert, a cool-touch bottom, and a comfortable stay-cool handle, as well as triple-action boil-dry protection and automatic shut-off for safety. Attractively housed in durable stainless steel, the electric water kettle measures approximately 9-1/2 by 7-1/5 by 10-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Oster 5965 Stainless-Steel 1-1/2-Liter Electric Water Kettle Review

Oster 5965 Stainless-Steel 1-1/2-Liter Electric Water Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read reviews for many electric kettles and in the end chose the great Oster 5965. It had no reviews at all, but had all the features that were important to us:
Concealed Element
Short cord/cord keeper
Auto-off, no whistle
Boil dry protection
Mesh/screen pouring filter
Water level indicator
This kettle boils water quickly and my favorite feature is the Keep Warm button. Especially helpful if you tend to get sidetracked like I do. Just don't forget to turn it off! It pours neatly, looks nice on the counter, and is great when you are cooking and need boiling water. The on/off switch is a rocker button and the Keep Warm is a push button. These two were a plus for me as they are sturdy to the touch. I felt the spring type switch on the Aroma (a contender) felt flimsy and that the time would come when it would not 'catch' in the on position.
The only con is the opening for adding water is rather small. I was concerned about cleaning it, however there are directions in the manual for cleaning it with a mix of white vinegar and water, allowing it to sit overnight to remove any scale buildup.
If you have read reviews of other products where people complain that the kettle gets hot, this one is no different. But what do you expect from a steel kettle that is full of boiling water?? It's no different than if it had been sitting on the stove except that you didn't have to heat up the element and have the residual heat from the stove heating up your kitchen.
I paid $40 at Target and I recommend this Oster Brushed Stainless Steel Kettle.

Attractively housed in brushed stainless steel, this electric kettle not only looks great in any contemporary kitchen, but it also quickly brings up to 1-1/2 liters of water to a rolling boil. To use, simply fill the kettle at the sink using the water-level indicator to gauge how much, return the kettle to its power base, plug it in, and turn it on. In a matter of minutes, hot water will be ready to use for anything from tea, instant coffee, and hot cocoa to instant soup or oatmeal. The kettle shuts off automatically once water has reached a full boil, and its keep-warm function maintains a ready-to-use hot-water temperature (or fast re-boiling when making black tea). Simply lift the jug off its 360-degree power base for graceful serving without the hassle of a cord, and return it at any angle. Even more, the unit offers boil-dry protection with auto shut-off for safety and peace of mind--no need to worry about the kettle operating without water inside. Other highlights include a concealed heating element, an "on" indicator light, a non-drip spout with a removable fine-mesh filter, a large stay-cool loop handle, and cord storage under the base for keeping excess cord wrapped neatly out of sight. The water kettle measures approximately 8-2/3 by 6-8/9 by 10-3/5 inches.

T-Fal Vitesses 1.7L (7-Cup) Electric Kettle Review

I spent hours researching every electric kettle available (and looking at them in person, in stores) before settling on this one. I've owned it for about 6 months now, and it's been great. The concealed heating element and the simple one-piece plastic jug design make it very easy to clean (not that I've needed to) and leak resistant (I assume, from a design perspective, since mine has no leaks yet). The only way it could leak is if the grommet sealing the metal bottom piece to the plastic jug developed a leak, whereas most of the stainless steel kettles being sold have several parts, many seams, and thus many places a leak could develop. There is some mild browning of the plastic inside the jug, I suppose a reaction to the high heat. This same thing happened with my roommate's older plastic electric kettle, so it's to be expected. People complain about plastic vs. stainless steel, I settled on plastic for one primary reason: it is a better insulator, so not only will it keep the water hotter for longer, it will be safer to handle in general (ie. it won't burn you or a child if it is accidentally picked up by its sides while it contains hot water). People complain about plastic "leeching chemicals" into the water, I haven't noticed any difference in taste, personally, and I doubt stainless steel would be much "safer" than plastic in this respect. The switch works great, and mine has never spilled water or over-boiled it (as long as it contains the minimum recommended amount of water). The spout and handle shapes make it easy to pour, and the locking top makes it pretty tough to spill. Definitely recommended, I'm buying another one for my parents right now.
PS - While researching electric kettles, I frequently saw complaints of how kettles designed for use in the USA don't heat water as fast as those in the UK. This is for a very simple reason: UK uses 240 volt power, USA uses 120 volts. Most electrical receptacles are rated for 15 amps (though the kitchen are often has at least two 20-amp circuits, per NEC recommendations). Watts = volts * amps, which means that UK kettles can get up to 240 volts * 15 amps = 3600 watts, while USA kettles can get up to 120 volts * 15 amps = 1800 watts. Manufacturers might sometimes avoid approaching this limit, perhaps due to safety or liability issues? Just note that this 1750 watt Tfal kettle is very close to the typical USA receptacle wattage rating. It's just about as high as you'll be able to get in the USA...most other USA electric kettles only go up to 1500 watts.

We bought one of these for our home and liked it so much I got another for my office. It is a quick safe way to boil water. It works much better than our teapot on our conventional stove and you can leave the room without worry about all the water boiling out and a possible fire.
It is so efficient that we often use it to heat up water before putting it in a pan on the stove. It is much faster. When we are making pasta we will put a small amount of water in a large pan and fill the teapot. The water in the pot is boiling before the water on the stove. The pot is light, even when full, and has no aftertaste like I have read some of the plastic ones do.
HOWEVER, we had owned our home pot for less than six months when the 'on' switch broke off. The pot was still usable, but you have to reach in and activate it with a fingernail. It was under limited warranty, but that involved mailing it to San Diego at our own cost and sending them a check for $8 to have it returned. Including the time and materials to package it up and then drive to the post office and have it gone for 2-4 weeks wasn't worth the effort.
I have concluded we just got a lemon. Because this happened and the warranty policy was so cumbersome, I originally gave this 3 stars. But our other one is working fine and the broken piece has turned out to be a small inconvenience, so I have revised my rating to 4.6, rounding up to 5.
