I was so sad when the handle began to come off, requiring soddering, but would most definitely recommend and purchase this product again. Prior to the Ilsa Neapolitan I had the Bialetti which was a BUST - replaced twice, plastic parts broke, a poor example of Italian coffee making design, or rather, over-produced and marketed in the U.S., whereas this Ilsa product is singular.

(More customer reviews)I just got this, and just tried it our for the first time, and I am madly in love with this espresso maker. The look is fantastic, I mean how often do you get to cook with something you're likely to see in the MOMA design wing? However, it's one thing to make a pretty object, but it's another to make a beautiful object that functions better than any other of it's kind: the design is fantastic. It pours without a single dribble, the handle doesn't get hot nor melts like your usual stove top maker, and it's Stainless Steel which means you're not going to leach out any nasty chemicals or flavors. I also love it because it give you the option to make a half batch, allowing this to function as a 3 cup when it's just you or a friend, or a 6 cup when you have company. I almost bought the 10 cup just so I could have the versatility of a 5/10 cup... but i'll never drink that much coffe... I mean it is espresso... which makes the 3/6 size ideal! I had lots of Bialettis when I lived in Italy, but I have a feeling nothing will be better than the espresso I make from my new Stella.

I had issues with the interior corroding and decided to try the Vev 12-cup - and I can't believe the difference. Same beans, same grind - but a completely different taste. I had no idea just switching to a different pot could make such a difference...it really was night and day. Only gripes are that assembling it to get a leak-proof seal seems a little challenging, and although it's labeled 12 cups, I get about 16oz. per brewing.

Alessi 9090/1 Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker 1 Cup Review

(More customer reviews)12 years ago I went to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time. It lasts two weeks...way too long when your "job" is basically to attend every party thrown. Somewhere in the middle of it I met a gorgeous German journalist. We ended up in London afterwards for a few more sodden days. When she came to visit me in L.A., she brought this Alessi 6-cup Stainless Steel Espresso maker as a gift. The relationship didn't last but ever since then, from L.A. to New York and back to L.A.; on open fires while camping; on snowboarding trips and aboard sailboats, I have made two pots of coffee a day and can't imagine life without it. Somewhere around 4 or 5 thousand pots and 7 years later, the lower half developed hairline cracks that allowed the water to leak out. Alessi replaced it for free.
The coffee is great but if you are looking for thick, strong espresso with the foam on top, this isn't it. It's more like strong coffee, which is perfect because the "6 cups" of espresso fills up one large mug and that's what I drink. It tastes delicious but is very much its own thing. Guests love it.
I like well-made machines and this is a coffee machine. The handle snaps down with an incredibly satisfying feel. The metal is thick and lustrous. Here's something great: because the whole pot heats up on the stove, the coffee inside will stay hot for an hour. Make sure you use a pot holder to grab the handle, though.
Here's one thing I can guarantee: from time to time you will forget the pot cooking on the stove until the smell of scorched coffee grounds reminds you. You will rush back to find the lower half blue with heat and bone dry, with the coffee burnt and boiling in the top half. At this point, don't do anything. Leave the whole thing on the stove to cool and take it apart only then. Pouring out the coffee and running cold water on it will cause the metal to weaken and leave you with the cracks mentioned above. Metal doesn't mind heat and would rather cool gradually.
Over time, the lower half will lose its brand new look but that's true of all of us I suppose. It you don't use abrasives on the top half it will remain new-looking forever. After a few years you may want to replace the rubber ring that seals the two halves.
Buy this espresso maker. You will not be sorry. Or buy it for a friend whom you want to remember you every time he makes coffee...for years.

Yes, if you didn't know that "made in PRC" meant People's Republic of China" you may be annoyed, but I realized that to begin with. Now that I have to replace it, I will go with an as yet undecided higher priced, but still stainless steel competitor, hopefully that will last longer.

(More customer reviews)It's a stainless moka. Sizes for espresso makers are measured in espresso shots, like what you'd get at starbucks. Two cups is 2oz. It takes some skill to use one of these. Start with espresso ground coffee. I like a full city roast rather than burnt black espresso roast. Less bitter. Personal preference. Preparation: you are trying to do this without getting the coffee hotter than necessary. The grounds cup should be full of espresso but not tamped. I boil water first, fill to the first line, put the holder in, screw the whole thing shut using a potholder on the bottom part, and then put the machine on a low burner, carefully keeping the handle away from the heat. You can learn why I do it exactly this way by doing it differently if you like. I've done a lot of experimentation. I like the espressos I get from my giant machine better, but I travel a lot and I bring one of these with me all the time. Stainless is nicer than aluminum because it can go through the dishwasher, doesn't fill up with weird guck if you don't clean it right away, and the top doesn't get hot as fast which helps keep your espresso from boiling which is good.

Primula 18/10 Stainless Steel 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker Review

(More customer reviews)My wife bought this after seeing one in use. It does as well as any stovetop espresso maker, and the stainless steel is a nice feature. The only problem is that the sealing ring (rubber?) appears to have shrunk somewhat so the pot leaks a bit as the espresso is made. While it is easy to find replacement rings for the more traditional 3 cup stovetop espresso makers, the outside diameter of the Primula sealing ring, while close in size, is about 1/4 inch larger than those and so the standard rings don't work as replacements. I have not been able to find a source for replacement rings for the Primula pot.

(More customer reviews)I've owned a few stovetop espresso makers over the years, and this is my favorite so far - cool comfortable rubber handles, the stainless steel will not corrode over time like another one I bought (which was beautiful but made of brass and eventually rusted). Looks handsome, works properly, and is easy to clean. Also doesn't use an internal rubber seal like the others I've had, which is great because a rubber seal can become a mess and I had one melt on me. I guess this one is precision-made well enough that it doesn't require one, because it works perfectly with no mess or splattering.
I didn't have the explosion experience that other commenter mentioned - if that happened, very likely you need to poke a pin through the steam escape valve in the bottom canister or run the device with just water to clean it out. If that bottom valve is blocked it'll make a mess of any stovetop maker. You may also just have a faulty item.
Full disclosure: I only paid $20 for this at Macy's (they have some great deals in the basement, especially over the holidays), but I would pay $50 for it. At that price I might start looking at espresso/cappuccino machines instead, but for a stovetop maker this one hits the bulls-eye.

And the stainless steel on this one, is not a flimsy layer that's going to wear off. In fact, i just sent this to my daughter for her birthday. She loves to entertain and this makes a lovely impression whether for one or for guests. You definitely won't want to hide this away. )
This product is apparently made by a Canadian company but IN China according to the literature that accompanies it - which speaks Volumes for company oversight in terms of quality control & definitely not the usual made in China purchase you wish you'd passed by.

(More customer reviews)This makes great espresso!! Here are a few tips to make a perfect cup of espresso: Remember to fill the water just below the safety valve. Too much water can prevent the valve from working properly. It's kinda like a pressure cooker. Too much water can cause problems.
Don't overfill the funnel with too much coffee. Too much coffee in the funnel can cause the coffee not to brew properly. I fill it just below the top edge of the funnel. Set your burner to medium or medium low and watch it carefully. Don't walk away because it can get ahead of you. Besides, watching the coffee brew is kinda cool ;) Keep working at it and you'll get the hang of it and pretty soon, you'll LOVE it! I use mine everyday and have had it for a few years now and I haven't had a single problem with it. Remember it is NOT the same espresso that you find at Starbucks. This makes traditional Italian espresso.
