Le Creuset 8-Quart Stockpot, Blue Review

I've used it and sent it back. My iron Le Cruset products are great. This one, made of steel and coated with enamel, started chipping on the exterior and interior after only one month of use. I was not impressed.

The Le Creuset stockpot is styled and colored to match other pieces in the collection, but due to its size is made of steel with an enamel coating. If it were made of cast iron you'd never be able to lift it safely, especially with bubbling soup or stew inside! The lid fits tightly to keep all those delicious aromas and flavors inside. This 8 quart pot is wonderful for simmering chicken stock or marinara sauce, boiling pasta for spaghetti night and steaming bulky vegetables.

I bought this and was about to clean it before first use and noticed that it cannot be used on glass cooktops. It is beautiful and I'll be buying another RR skillet that is appropriate for my stove.

The best thing about the Emile Henry is that it goes safely on the stove as well as in the oven. Brown the meat and onions first then add the spices and liquid and put in the oven. A few hours later you have wonderfully tender tagine.

Emile Henry Flame-Top ceramic cookware is light and versatile, an innovative breakthrough in ceramic technology. Our new line of Burgundy Clay Flame-Top ceramic products work directly on any stove top (gas, electric, glass or halogen hob), without any fear of cracking or breaking. Much lighter, (30% lighter), than many types of comparable metal cookware products, Flame-Top is microwave and dishwasher-safe, goes under the broiler, and can go directly from a freezer to a hot oven. The incredibly gentle heat distribution properties of Burgundy Clay makes it a cooking vessel perfect for braising, browning and slow cooking.Flame-Top products cook evenly and thoroughly when used on top of the stove, in the oven or even in the microwave. Enhancing this gentle cooking action are raised dots on the inside of each lid that evenly distribute evaporated juices directly back into the cooking food. This self-basting technique produces a more thoroughly cooked, tender and moist dish than with traditional lids, which force liquids to run down the sides of the pot. Emile Henry Flame-Top ceramic cookware is light and versatile, and better brings out the flavors of all cooked foods.

Staub 5 Quart Round Cocotte, Royal Blue Review

Staub 5 Quart Round Cocotte, Royal Blue

Owning both Le Creuset products and now Staub, my Staub has quickly become my favorite enameled cast iron pot, FAR surpassing Le Creuset in quality and usability. The metal handle is the first, most obvious difference and I almost purchased the item based on that fact alone. It's easy to grab even with pot holders and the design of the lid makes the lid-handle transition area seamless - unlike LC. The LC knob is oven safe to 450 or so, but I like the reassurance of metal. Besides it looks nicer. The next obvious difference is the design of the lid. First, the lid fits tightly and more snugly than LC. It is flat on top rather than domed. Second, the self-basting spikes, while not exactly as revolutionary as they claim, are a nice addition and work relatively well when stove top braising (in oven braising it doesn't seem to make as much difference because of the all-around heat). Third, is the interior of the pot. It is a black matte finish with a little bit of texture to it. I like it better than the smooth LC but I will admit it's sometimes hard to see foods browning against a dark black interior. The final point I'll make is that the Staub cast iron is thicker than the LC. Thicker means heavier, but it also means better heat retention. Enough said, when going for French enameled cast iron I will no longer look to Le Creuset and I suggest you do the same.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 9-Quart Round French Ovens Review

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 9-Quart Round French Ovens

Three years ago, I ordered one of these beauties because I noticed that each and every host on the Food Network, from Martha to Mario was using this pot. I didn't know Le Creuset from Adam, and I thought the height of culinary sophistication was my eight quart Calphalon anodized aluminum Dutch oven. I even went so far in thinking that the TV guys were using this pot because it was white on the inside, so it was easy for the camera to see what was going on.
Boy, was I wrong. Ever since I got this pup, I have used it for every soup, every braise, every stew, and every pot roast I have made since. At about the same time I got an oval shaped pot and a similar sized pot shaped primarily for making soups. All three are about the same size and weight. I never use the other two except when I have something which is a lot longer than it is wide.
The heat management is flawless, it is easy to clean, and it is tolerant of too much heat.
As other reviewers have noted, it is a bit heavy, so if you commonly have problems with heavy cookware, consider a smaller one or my retired aluminum pot.
Very highly recommended for both gas and electricity.

Le Creuset Demi Teakettle Review

Le Creuset Demi Teakettle
Average Reviews:

This kettle has the wonderful, traditional Le Creuset whistle when the water comes to a boil. It has elegant styling and a durable vessel. What one would expect from such a respecable brand.
It's got some serious flaws though. The handle extends beyond the edges of the kettle an so picks up quite a bit of heat from the burner underneath. It can be extremely hot if you don't take care to use a low flame.
More serious though is that the lid is fitted so snuggly that one needs to place ones palm on the handle and grasp the lids knob with the fingers, then squeeze to make a fist in order to get enough leverage to pull the lid off. It was only after the knob finally broke off that I discovered that the threaded screw holding it on was less than 4 millimeters long.
After 4 months of use, into the trash this kettle goes. I expected better from a brand like Le Creuset.

I bought the wrong size...this is REALLY tiny. And it's really not worth returning it, so it will just sit in the back of the cupboard for the rest of time, I suppose! However, the bigger version I was initially after, I love. I actually have been using the bigger one for a year--ideal for Tian recipes. However, it isn't quite as sturdy as you might expect from Corningware and easily chips...which is why I was in the market to replace it.

This pot is beautiful! The blue is vibrant. This is my third enamel cast iron piece and I just love how they brown meat perfectly and clean up great. I can brown 5 chicken breasts at once in this pot, it also reduces liquids quickly. This dish is built to last... heavy, sturdy construction. I will have it for my lifetime and I have no doubt that my children or even grandchildren will use it too!

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 4-1/2-Quart Round French Ovens Review

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 4-1/2-Quart Round French Ovens

A month or so ago I was crusing the housewares department here at Amazon.com, looking for a Dutch oven. I'd nearly settled on Calphalon, but I read a review (gotta love these things!) which said that though Calphalon was generally the cookware of choice, for Dutch - in this case French - ovens, Le Creuset was the brand to buy. I took this advice to heart, in part because I loved the cherry red finish, and bought this 4.5 quart oven.
I want to thank that reviewer; it was one of the best pieces of advice I've had in ages. Le Creuset has produced one of the best, most versatile pieces of cookware I've ever owned. This pan heats evenly and holds the heat, but you really have to work at getting food to burn in it. It goes from stove to oven to table with real panache. Nothing sticks. Ever. Really, I'm not kidding here because I did manage to burn something by walking away and forgetting about it for an hour. But after another hour's soak and a scrub with a nylon pad, the residue was completely removed, leaving no discoloration of the lovely cream-colored enamel of the interior. I use it nearly every day now; I don't know how I got on for so long without it.
I would also like to point out that the cherry red color is very jolly. It might even provoke you to speak French (or at least with an outrageous Monty Pythonesque French accent) while you're cooking. "Allo, now we add zee ahnyon. Zut alors!" That sort of thing. Of course if you find the idea silly, perhaps you should buy the piece in a more sedate color.
Bottom line, this is a great piece of cookware. C'est vrai!

Lodge Enameled Cast-Iron 11-Inch Skillet Review

Lodge Enameled Cast-Iron 11-Inch Skillet

(More customer reviews)
I've had this pan for several months now and had previously been used to frying with regular cast iron or stainless steel. I have a flat top stove and am not supposed to use my cast iron on it so I thought I would try this one instead. I've found that the interior is better than stainless steel for cooking certain things (like over-easy eggs) with a simple clean-up and minimal sticking. It's also good for reheating left-over meals, or making pancakes.
However, when I tried cooking things like sausage, or stir-fry meat, or with any sauces that contained sugar, I ended up with charred bits that would not come off. I tried boiling the pan with vinegar, or scouring gently with baking soda and nothing works. I did of course follow the directions and have never cooked on any setting above medium (usually, I use medium low). Then I made the mistake of frying falafel in the pan. I now have a permanent layer of caramelized oil on the bottom of my pan. Add the two chips on the handle that came off within the first week of use (and I am extremely gentle with this pan), and I would have to say I am fairly disappointed.
I also own the Lodge Enamel 6 quart dutch oven, and that item is fabulous. Not a chip or stain on it, even though I use it extensively. Also, I have fried up some of the same things in the dutch oven as the fry pan - with no sticking/stains in the dutch oven, but with permanently charred bits in the fry pan. Lodge should have made this one with the glossy interior.
Perhaps I'll replace this one with the 3 quart covered casserole since it has the glossy interior.
