Wood Fire Starter Review

Wood Fire Starter

This is one of those products that would probably get a 5-star review if there weren't other products on the market that are far better. I've always used StarterLogg's. One of the big box stores didn't have them and they assured me these Duraflames were the same thing - they're not.
Starterlogg's have the consistency of pressboard mixed with wax. When you separate them they leave craggly surface that starts fire easily. Duraflames are closer to MDF - much denser and smoother - harder to start. They also have a wax paper wrapper which you're supposed to light. Every time I've tried this the paper just burns off and leaves a charred lump.
The only way I've found to use these is tear the wrapper off, break a brick into smaller pieces, scrape one end to try to get a rough surface area and light. Then after it's been burning for 3-4 mins take a fireplace poker and knock off the burning end to make kind of an "ember slurry". After that it will burn good, and start anything, but it's just more hassle than it needs to be when there are much better options for the same price.
By the way, if you dont mind the effort you can make your own just by mixing melted paraffin/candle wax with sawdust.

GSI Outdoors Coffee Pots and Boilers Review

GSI Outdoors Coffee Pots and Boilers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This basic boiler coffee pot gets the job done. The lid on this boiler is attached, so you don't drop it in the fire and make the other cowboys mad. The GSI brand pots are a little thin and easy to dent, and the lids are not always a perfect fit. Old pots are much thicker. But for the price this one will do the job.
You can also use the other more sturdy brands percolator pots and take out the basket and tube.
Boiled coffe is a learned procedure and takes practice. If you cannot face having a bit of grounds in your coffee, or a dented pot with black soot marks on it, this may not be for you. This pot is not really for the stove. A boiled coffee pot like this one is meant for the campfire, or the fire-pit at home if you have one.
CARE OF POT: If you want it to stay nice and clean looking, wet the outside with a bit of soap before you put it on the fire, and let it dry to an invisible shield. Soot wipes right off when you wash it. Unless this stays outside all the time, this is a really smart idea to save the nice color on your pot. There is no basket, filter, tube, or other clutter to worry about, I want as little fussiness as possible for campfire coffee.
RECIPE FOR BOILED COFFEE: Here is a recipe from the book I am writing: Use 3/4 cup of coffee grounds per quart of coffee, or one coffee measure scoop per coffee cup of water. Heat the amount of water you intend to use in your pan over a hot fire, until boiling. Then add the coffee grounds, and an eggshell. Yes I said an eggshell. Get the water back to boiling as it slows for a couple of minutes after dropping in the coffee. Pull the pot off the fire and set it aside for a few minutes. Pour in a 1/2 cup of cold water. Along with the eggshells, this helps the grounds sink to the bottom of your pot. Some people do not like the cold water trick as they want the coffee as hot as possible. If that is you, just set it aside about 5 minutes to settle. Now the next secret to this is.... Don't pour it out! Instead use a scooper or a ladle to serve your coffee so that you do not stir up the grounds again. If you do not have a ladle, pour really really slow. That is why the lid on a boiler is supposed to be bigger than a lid on a percolator. TIP: Remember not to drink the cup to the bottom, throw out the last bit has grounds, then get a fresh cup. Now when I was a kid there were tricks that my uncles used when hunting involving socks as bag for grounds, but don't even ask me to go there. This type of pot is also convenient for leaving on the fire during the day to keep hot water going for washing dishes, bathing, cooking, or to make some hot chocolate or tea in the cup.
Now keep in mind that this page lists about 6 or more different size posts, some are percolators, so make sure you get what you really need. Boilers tend to come in bigger sizes that percolators, so if you need a BIG pot, you can get a boiler all the way up to 36 cups. Now that looks impressive on a fire. I hope all this helps you, Happy Trails!

Coleman Quick Pack Grill - Black Review

Coleman Quick Pack Grill - Black

I used this grill for tailgating and camping for a few summers and have really enjoyed it. The legs are admittedly a bit tough to get out of the holes sometimes but it is a minor inconvenience. When grilling I always am sure to fill the bottom pan with water, it makes cleanup a breeze. I like that the grill top is removable, I use the burner with pans and my Camp Coffee Pot. When my husband and I bought our first house we even used it before we took delivery on our appliances and (bigger) gas grill. This is a nice starter grill, serious tailgaters will want more, but enjoyable for a couple of people and super portable for camping.

Product says use for low pressure on the outside packaging. Inside it says do not use for low pressure. The truth is that it is adjustable for both low and high pressure. Unfortunately, if you set it in the high pressure level and use it on a low pressure stove there is so much gas leaking that it may be dangerous. Very confusing and probably dangerous.

Fantastic on a regular stove burner - at least on our electric. Even heat distribution all around, and the angled lip is great for spatulating and mess avoidance. I got nine 2oz slider burgers on it with plenty of room to grill the onions on the side. Simple green-pad cleanup, and I use a wipe-on cast iron treatment before storage.

Bought two 3-packs of the smaller cans at a hardware store (they were out of the large ones). It proudly claims "Up to 3 hrs burn time" when in reality we got about 20 or 30 minutes out of each one. I guess they were lying - it did say "up to" and not "at least." Needless to stay our little buffet did not stay warm near as long as expected. Terrible, would not recommend.

Brunton Striker Review

Brunton Striker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product after using my son's Light My Fire Firesteel. The Brunton product is harder to get a good spark throw from than the Light My Fire brand. Primarily because the steel does not have a "sharp" edge. There are triangular notches cut out with ridges on the Brunton model meant to "bite" into the "flint" but I found these not very effective. In fact the steel snapped in two when trying to strike using this method... The good thing about that is now the striking steel has a sharp edge and makes striking a spark much easier and throws the spark further!
If you are thinking about buying one of these I still would suggest you buy the light my fire brand...it's not much more $ and it's just a better product.

With the long-wearing Firesteel of the Brunton Striker Fire Starter, a hot shower of sparks is never far from hand. The Striker's ignition steel and a stainless striker replace less-dependable methods of firestarting, so you'll always have a way to start a warming, cooking, or signal fire, even if you took a dunk in the river. Firesteel is good for thousands of uses, but we hope you don't have to bring it out that much.Product Features

Well, bought this to replace the original lamp in the 71 Shasta Compact I am rebuilding. The fit is almost identical to the original light in the trailer. The lamp housing is of good quality and the gas valve works nicely. Best of all, they are available!

For dependable light without having to worry about electrical wiring or fully charged batteries, this indoor propane gaslight comes in handy. Camp Chef RCB60 Deluxe roller carry bag Review

Camp Chef RCB60 Deluxe roller carry bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this today, for my Camp Chef Explorer 2-burner stove, at a local sporting goods store. It came in a factory taped box. The bag is a little different from what is shown, mine says CAMP CHEF and SPORT GRILL in big red letters on the front. I think I like the plain bag better, but really, it's just lipstick.
The bag itself is made out of very heavy duty ballistic cloth and is lined in a water resistant vinyl. It has carry handles like the one you see in the picture on both ends, so 2 people can carry it. It has 3 inline roller blade style wheels that look like they are somehow riveted into the bag, as opposed to being screwed in... a cost cutting feature.
There are some skid pads on the back of the bag which will be good as you drag it up a flight of stairs. The zipper opens 3/4 of the way around the top side of the bag making it easy to get the stove in and out.
If you look carefully at the picture you will see that there is a curved area in the back of the bag, I thought this was for wheels, but its really storage for some 1LB propane tanks, at least that's what the picture on the box shows. My Explorer, I think, might be a smidgen too big to have room for the tanks. Besides, you'd need an adapter to use the 1LB tanks, which I don't have.
I also placed two of the single burner cast iron grill/griddles on the stove after placing it into the bag. On top of that I placed the wheel and windscreen bag. This item has 3 heavy duty velcro straps to secure everything nicely. Once I got everything in there I stood the unit up on the wheels and dragged it around, it works really well.
I wanted to get the RCB90 bag for the 3 burner units to give me some extra space, but the bags at the shop did not have the velcro straps... which are very important in keeping everything together.
I think I'll use the rounded area for the propane tanks to store a little tool bag with the miscellaneous hardware, hose, crescent wrench, etc.
All in all, this bag is very reasonably priced for what you get and how it is designed.
If it didn't have the big bold lettering, it would make a nice travel duffel too.

Swedish FireSteel Army Model (Red) with MayaDust Review

I would not again buy the combination of Swedish FireSteel Army Model (Red) with MayaDust. The Swedish FireSteel Army Model works well once a strip of the black paint is remove. The MayaDust is dry, but cottonballs with the lower half dipped in Vasoline works mush better. In this I mean cottonballs normally catch fire on the first try and the MayaDust is difficult to light. Also I was hoping the tin the MayaDust came in a tin made of metalm so the fire could be struck in tin's lid and then places under small tinder sticks, as was the historic method. The tin is plastic.

Camp chef made a boo-boo here. I ordered this carry bag for my Sport grill box bb-60L. Thermos Thermal Cooker RPC-4500 4.5L Thermo Pot Review

Thermos Thermal Cooker RPC-4500 4.5L Thermo Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this for travel days and potlucks. I did not realize how much I would use it for everyday meals and such. It is much safer than an electric slow cooker and produces far superior results with only a small learning curve.
This is much better constructed than the cheaper foam filled models. I expect many years of service from this high quality setup.
It is quite easy to use.
-Place the ingredients being cooked into the SS inner cook. pot .
-Bring it up to temp and hold for 10 mins or so.
-Place the SS lid on the inner cook pot.
-Insert the SS Cook pot into the thermal outer pot.
The dish will finish cooking and stay hot for 8hrs.
The vegetables maintain their shape, color and flavor. They are not cooked to a colorless, flavorless mush which is often what a conventional slow cooker does.
I have found accessories purchased for the 4.5L cooker from the thermalcookwaredotcom website to be a terrific setup. The cooker itself is too heavy to be shipped from Australia to be cost effective, but the accessories are not. I haven't found another place that offers all the terrific accessories to enhance the functionality of the cooker. This site is also a great place to obtain recipes for the thermal cooker. Another good site for those that are new to this method of cooking is thermalcookerdotwordpressdotcom. Both have recipes and techniques for main dishes, desserts, breads, drinks, etc in the thermal cooker.
The accessories offered at thermalcookwaredotcom make the cooker much more versatile. The bain marie insert allows 2 items to be cooked separately at the same time. The steamer insert allows vegetables to be steamed while a main dish is cooking in the larger pot. The lidded SS loaf and round tin allow quick breads and cakes to be "baked " even while I sleep. If you have never tried steamed quick breads, you are in for a real treat. The breads and cakes come out moist and tender. For cakes I halve the recipe and pour the single layer batter into the round tin and "bake". I then slice it in half crosswise after it is cooled and frost. Viola! A perfect sized two layer cake for one to two people. I also ordered the racks to place my tins on to prevent them from becoming totally immersed in the boiling water. Water should not enter the tins. it should only come about half way up the side.
The thermal cooker can also be used to keep foods cold on hot days at picnics, potluck and the like. It also serves double duty as an ice bucket.
Don't forget to try hot drinks such as mulled wine, and hot cocoa in the thermal cooker. Can also be used to keep drinks such as lemonade, punch, etc. cold during hot weather.
I would recommend the 4.5 litre thermal cooker for 1-4 people. The Thermos Thermal Cooker RPC-6000W 2x3L Thermo Pot with two 3l inner pots and a single 6l inner pot would provide optimal cooking abilities for 4 or more.
BTW- the Thermos/Shuttle Chef thermalcooker works on induction cooktops.

The THERMOS Thermal Cooker 4.5 liter (1.1 gal) RPC-4500 Shuttle Chef is a healthy, economical and convenient way to cook. Assemble all the ingredients in the stainless thermos inner pot, put it on the stove and bring to a boil. Then remove the inner pot from the stove and place it inside the outer thermo pot which serves as a vacuum insulated stainless steel thermos container to keep the contents hot. There is no need to plug in any power cord. The food will continue its thermal cooking process using the retained heat. After the required time (e.g. rice 30 min; chicken stock 2 hrs; beef brisket 3.5 hrs), just open the outer thermal pot, and a nutritional and flavorful meal is hot and ready. The vacuum insulated Thermos thermal cookware has excellent heat retention capacity; the food inside the pot can retain a temperature of about 160 degree Fahrenheit even after 8 hours. It's safe to leave unattended because there is no power or pressure needed to cook. The thermal cooking process requires no further supervision or monitoring. Food can be cooked while you are traveling. You can cook with this cookware anywhere, anytime and it's safe to use indoors or out. It saves money and fuel because after the food as been placed inside the outer thermo pot there is no extra energy needed to maintain the heat or cold for the next 6 to 12 hours. Entraps flavor, minerals and vitamins; generates less odor, grease and smoke in the kitchen. Doesn't over cook and cleans up easily. This model is like the Thermos Nissan thermal cooker CC4500 vacuum cooker. This is great stuff to get prepared with.Item shipping costs is based on using FedEx carrier. Brunton Firestorm Lighter Review

Brunton Firestorm Lighter

This lighter works great when you're at sea level, and if that's your goal then look no further. It is well built, and lights very easily when enough oxygen is present.
If, on the other hand, you take this lighter backpacking at elevations higher than 8,000 feet, then your mileage may vary. It takes a lot of convincing to light at all at these elevations, and you may find yourself without a flame at all.
The instructions advise you use premium butane fuel, and to set the fuel level to the lowest setting when at higher elevations, both of which I did. Unfortunately it still took 10-20 "clicks" before I got any sort of flame, which is unacceptable.

Son of Hibachi Combo with Snuff out Pouch Review

Son of Hibachi Combo with Snuff out Pouch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this grill because it looked like it had it all, and I must say it really lived up to the expectations. Living in Sweden we have a fairly short summer that really makes you want to be out as often as you can. For me happiness lives in the ability to barbecue. Disposable grills is something that is big here, unfortunately its not very environmentally friendly or very good. So far the Son of Hibachi has been able to replace them with style.
The product description is pretty much on the money. Start-up is easy and fast, I would say the 10 minute mark can swing up and down a little depending on what coals you use. Lump coal is faster, briquettes a little slower - but if you can normally light your coals with fire starters, be it liquids or other you will have no problem here. The chimney effect of the closed up grill is noticeable and works as a charm.
When you notice the top coals are lit, peeking down from the top, you fold it open and the top handles become legs for the grill sides to rest upon. What strikes you at first is the intense heat wave created by the two surfaces - it is hot! Fortunately you can adjust the grilles in four levels to reduce some of that intense first heat.
We have tried cooking some different things now from hot dogs to chicken breasts to hamburgers and so far it has all worked out very well. The heavy duty grilles leave some nice black patterns on the cooking surface, just the way I think it should be.
The whole construction breathes sturdy, everything has that robust feel about it - all packed with coals it weighs in on about 16 pounds (7.5 kilo) which is a little heavy but knowing that nothing about this grill spells flimsy I accept that.
Another real good thing about this combo is the Snuff-out-pouch which really elevates this purchase. Once done grilling you close up the grill again and let that chimney effect clean of your grilles. Then smoking hot you put it down in your fire retardant pouch and zip it up - in litterally less than 10 seconds you are ready to go. Sure the bag heats up a little but considering the heat of the grill its nothing. The instructions state to leave it for at least 30 minutes before putting it in your trunk - an obvious protection against lawsuits. We have found this to be, in our case, unnecessary. As long as it stands up it's not going to damage anything. The bag can let out some smoke initially when packed but this settles pretty fast once oxygen depravation in the bag sets in.
My only gripe about Amazons product description is that the grill ships with a "Grill N Fry cast iron griddle for cooking eggs, pancakes, etc." which is only half true. Part of the grille has a flat surface true, but I don't see how it would be enough for a pancake an egg id probably fine. Luckily you can get a complete frying surface as an accessory if you look around online for a little bit.
All in all this is a marvelous little bbq which is well worth its pretty low price tag (in my opinion). Highly recommended for the excursion barbecuer.
EDIT: I would like to clarify one thing with the snuff-out pouch. I did actually manage to burn a backpack slightly I had crammed against the side of the pouch in my trunk. The sides of the pouch does get very hot after packing so I would avoid putting anything against it for a while. THe front and back however never gets very hot.
