A wood burning stove is best for this fan as the heavily insulated pellet stoves don't have enough surface heat to get the fan spinning decently. I have an Englander wood stove and run it at around 400-550 degrees and this fan pushes enough air that it will flutter a dangling piece of paper from 10ft away. It is also silent and I do mean silent (very nice) whereas those bolt-on accessory fans made for wood stoves that plug into the wall outlet sound like a hairdryer on terminal overload.
The fan generates electricity and runs from the temp differential between the stove surface and the heat sinks at the top (some kind of piezzo electric thing or some such). If you fire up the stove too hot (over 600 degrees) there's a metal flat spring on the bottom of the fan base that tips up the front a fraction of an inch to keep the fan from getting too hot and damaging it. As the stove cools back down below 600deg the spring straightens back out and the fan sits flat on the stove surface again.
I cannot recommend this product enough. It's wonderful.
