Mirro 6-Quart Pressure Cooker, Aluminum Review

If you have a glass top I would not buy this model
Amazon says the following in the description
15 lb. pressure control. Removable self sealing gasket. Safety fuse. Heatproof handles with reminder ring. Strong aluminum alloy. Rack and instruction booklet. Not recommended for canning.
It does not have a rack in mine, it does not have a 15 pound control, it is 10 pound by the instructions.
Amazon says nothing about cooking on a glass top, instruction Book says not to use on glass top stoves because the bottom has a concave in the middle that won't allow it to get up to pressure, Well I have a glass top and not wanting to send it back I tried it, came to a boil faster than a old (20 or more years)I own, Put the lid on and it locked fairly quick, maybe 5 minutes? steam started coming out of the top, I waited about 2 minutes and put the weight on, maybe 6 to 8 minutes it was bounceing like it should, so much for not coming up to pressure on a glass top stove.
The finish is super polished, Looks like stainless steel not aluminum. add photo does not do it justice.
After the test and using it once I found another DO NOT USE ON GLASS TOP,
so I sent a E mail to consumeraffairs@wearever.com today
here is what I asked
model 92160 6 quart cooker
Bought it on line at Amazon.com
the descripttion on their web site didn't say any thing about a glass top stove.

in the instructions saw that it might not come up to pressure on a glass top which I have,
I tested it with just water to see and it came up to pressure really fast, twice as fast as my old mirror 4 quart flat bottom pressure cooker I have.
so I cooked a resipe of rice pudding in the book and it did what it was suppossed to do, came up to pressure fast and cooked just like the book instructions time setting.
Then I was rereading the instruction book some more and I came accross this
Got it and in the page 2 of instructions and it says
do not use on flat glass top or glass ceramic ranges could damage cooker, this cooker has a curved concave bottom which will not make proper contact with the cooking surface which could result in damage to your pressure cooker.
what do they mean damage, is it going to blow up or what.
I can't understand why it would be any diffront than a electric coil wire stove top, it wouldn't contact the bottom any more than My glass top, in fact less ,,according to you to get proper contact you would have to use a gas stove only.
Is it safe to use on my glass top? 2-19-09

UPDATE AT BOTTOM: Wow, is this a neat appliance. As a pressure cooker, it cooks food as nicely, and as quickly as my old, stainless stove-top model, but with several bonuses. Cleanup is much easier with the Nesco. It browns your meat without any sticking, so you can just toss your other ingredients right in after browning, and switch it to cook. No extra pan to wash. The nonstick pot, also, is much lighter, and washes out instantly vs the heavy ol'stove model that required soaking. Best of all, though, is how quiet it is! No babysitting the constant CH!CH!CH!CH! on the stove anymore. Set it, and it cooks in complete silence without another moment's thought, and no adjustments necessary. You could leave the house (it also has a timer to start cooking later if you wish). The Nesco is a slow cooker, as well. I have been so annoyed with how hot all the new slow cookers are. I've bought several brands trying to fnd a true "slow cooker". They all cook at nuclear heat, and every review of every new slow cooker says the same thing. The Nesco cooks nice and slow just like the old fashioned crock pots did. I love this cooker. The manual blows, though. How strange that the cooker is so well thought, but the quality control for the manual fell flat. It is contradictory, incomplete, and explains the buttons and timer wrong. The recipes are not appealing. Who cares. You'll love the Nesco cooker. It will replace your crock-pot and your stove-top pressure cooker. I've not tried it yet on steaming, but it might just replace the rice cooker and veg. steamer, too. Think of all the room in your cupboards, now.
Jan 2001: OK, my original cooker still works and I still like it, but I'm ticked!!! off!!! at Metal Ware customer service. We got one of these for my brother for Christmas, and it would not even power on. Customer service at Metal Ware Corp requires us to pay to get it shipped for repairs. 15 lbs and a BRAND NEW ITEM and I have to pay this ridiculous shipping fee on top of the very expensive purchase price. I no longer have warm fuzzies for the cooker since customer service is BAD.

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7-3/8-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker Review

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7-3/8-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandmother and my mother both used pressure cookers frequently. When I was younger, one of the first kitchen items I purchased was a pressure cooker of my very own (a Hawkins Futura jiggle-type, which still works perfectly).
Recently, I decided to purchase the 7 liter Kuhn Rikon, primarily because it is larger than my Futura. Some other reviewers have noted that the Kuhn Rikon requires more monitoring than jiggle-type pressure cookers. This is only somewhat true. Jiggle-type pressure cookers release steam throughout the cooking process. This provides confirmation that the cooker is operating through sound. It IS convenient if this is what you are used to. However, these cookers require more liquid to achieve pressure and as a result, certain items can come out more watery than I prefer. You can boil away the excess liquid after releasing pressure, but then you lose some of the time saved.
The Kuhn Rikon uses an advanced enclosed system. As a result, the "sound of pressure", or hiss is missing. A small valve with two red lines provides confirmation that half and full pressure have been achieved. At this point in the cooking process, you must turn down the heat to maintain pressure only; if you leave the heat on high, pressure will continue to rise. Without sound to guide you, one must rely on visual clues. The Kuhn Rikon makes it easy. But, it IS different than listening for the hiss.
The first few times you use the cooker, you will need to determine how far to lower your cooktop temperature to maintain the pressure in the cooker. This does require monitoring and a little guess work. However, once you determine how your cooktop and pressure cooker interact, it is the same every time. From that point on, you simply wait for the red line to appear and turn your cooktop down to your pre-determined setting. Set the timer and you're almost done. Easy. In addition:
1. The enclosed system is virtually silent;
2. The enclosed system allows fast, high temperature cooking without heating up your kitchen;
3. The benefits of a lower liquid requirement to achieve high pressure can not be overstated.
The Kuhn Rikon system is different but produces superior results. For those who possess even a modicum of patience, I highly recommend this pressure cooker.

The integral lid-locking system comes with 5 safety steam-release systems that pretty much eliminate mishaps once associated with pressure cookers. The 18/10 stainless steel cooker won't react to foods being cooked, and the solid thermal aluminum bottom promotes even browning and rapid heat absorption. The bottom pan is dishwasher safe.

Fagor Duo Stainless-Steel 6-Quart Pressure Cooker Review

Fagor Duo Stainless-Steel 6-Quart Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a Kuhn Rikon and still have a Presto pressure cooker. I got rid of the Kuhn Rikon. I love the Fagor Duo. The Kuhn Rikon design is a real pain if you have an electric stove. It is probably almost acceptable if you have a gas stove. The Fagor models work equally well on either type stove. Also, along the same lines, the Fagor and the Presto designs are much more forgiving. You better plan on watching a Kuhn Rikon very closely -- especially on an electric stove -- but also on a gas range. It can get to an over pressure situation easily. Granted you will likely just blow out part of your gasket (the safety measure) if you get distracted. Who needs that? You better have an eagle eye and fast reactions to maintain a reasonably constant pressure inside your cooker with an electric stove.
You do lose some steam with a Fagor though typically much less than with a Presto model. (You lose nearly no vapor with a Kuhn Rikon -- that is about their only big selling point in my book.) The Fagor model uses a compressed spring to regulate pressure. The Presto uses a weight on top of a vent pipe -- this combination is called a jiggler valve -- to regulate pressure. To regulate pressure with a Kuhn Rikon you basically watch a rising spring loaded pressure indicator and adjust the heat as needed. Gas heat is more quickly adjustable than electric. You have to either hope for the best as you crank the heat up and down with an electric stove or play hop scotch between a too hot and a too cold burner. On the Fagor Duo there are two spring compression settings. You can cook at 8 psig or 15 psig. 15 psig is the normal setting used for most pressure cooking. For delicate foods, like fish, or if you are in no particular rush the 8 psig setting will come in handy.
Bottom line is I like the Fagor the best of the three pressure cookers I discussed, next I like the Presto. The Kuhn Rikon is built like a tank and it is an interesting design. I just don't like it as well as the Fagor's and I am a both a mechanical engineer and I cook for a hobby. I'd like to think my opinion is an informed one.

Have a succulent roast ready for the whole family in a third of the time of regular roasting. This Duo cooker offers a quick way of cooking and enough room for a family meal. A pressure cooker is also a wonderful resource for canning and simmering stocks. The spring-type mechanism in a dial format can be moved from one setting to another without changing valves: high (15 psi) and low (8 psi). Unlike pressure cookers of from the past, you'll never experience noisy steam escaping or mushy food. Most important is that you can cook high-fiber, low-fat foods in record time while preserving essential vitamins and nutrients - and conserving energy, too! The 18/10 stainless surface won't interact with food. Other features include an aluminum-bonded diffuser base for even heat distribution, a triple-safety mechanism, pressure control valves plus two independent over-pressure release valves and a safety lock on the handle. Includes a steamer basket, trivet and recipe book.

Fagor 9 Piece Pressure Canning Set Review

Pressure canned apple butter, in pints and half pints, using the Duo 10-quart pressure cooker/canner and very satisfied with its performance. The spring-style pressure mechanism is very quiet compared to the rocker style, and the psychological effect is less like a rocket launch and more like using ordinary cookware. The solid-bottomed 18/10 stainless steel has a beautiful, mirror-like finish and is compatible with induction range tops (Fagor manufactures induction ranges). The pressure slide did hang up one time, and the cooker wouldn't pressurize, but with persistence the slide goes in with a little wiggling. The 10-quart Duo holds four pint or five half-pint jars on the slightly undersized canning rack - a reasonable load for the home canner. The stainless steel ladle and funnel look great and are almost as solid as the cooker. The stainless steel funnel can be submersed in boiling water, and although that's not really necessary with pressure canning, why not kill bacteria when you can? The magnetic lid lifter is a great tool if you are boiling the lids, also not necessary except for water bath canning, but if you're rinsing the funnel in boiling water, why not throw in the lids for good measure? Haven't used the jar wrench because you only tighten lids finger tight when pressure canning. The bubble freer is a useful tool and the jar lifter is a must -- it's great to get all the tools as a set. As a pressure cooker, the Fagor Duo 10-quart can handle anything you can throw into it. Brown a pot roast, throw in two cans of mushroom soup, a packet of onion soup, a cup of water, pressurize and an hour later you have a pot roast with fabulous sauce. Vegetables should go in later or above the roast in the optional steamer insert to avoid turning them into mush. The manual is well written and the DVD features a couple of professional chefs who do a terrific job of showing how easy it is to pressure cook various dishes, including grains and cheesecake. The video hosts are charming and natural, and the DVD gets five stars for taking the fear and mystery out of pressure cooking.

I am a first time user of any type of pressure cooker so was a little afraid of the old stories of pressure cookers. However, that fear is all gone. I had no trouble what so ever following the manual that came with the Presto stainless steel electric Pressure cooker. It is so easy. Just follow the directions. Have cooked several times with it already. Food was great. I have even cooked one of the recipes. The only thing I would suggest is brown your meats in an alternate pan as it does have a tendency to stick to the bottom of the cooker. Bottom line is I would recommend this product. The sealing ring fits around the inside rim of the cover and forms a pressure-tight seal between the cover and the body of the pressure cooker during cooking or canning. When installing a sealing ring, work it into the cover in four small sections, for example, top, bottom, left and right. Work it into the groove a small section at a time until it is fully in place. Place the cover on the cooker body. Put one hand on the top center of the cover and push down firmly. Open and close the cover several times. The 09936 sealing ring fits both the 4- and 6-quart stainless steel cookers and 6-quart aluminum cookers.

.....I am a longtime cook, skilled with old aluminum Presto pressure cookers. I received the Fagor Splendid 2-in-1 cooker as a requested gift about 3 years ago. My biggest complaint after a couple years of use was the fancy V-cross-section gasket, which stopped sealing properly after about a year of use, and is pricey to replace. 2009 update: Fagor has switched to a much longer lasting grey gasket (the early ones were turquoise) that seals better. I bought one a couple of years ago and it is still going strong.
.....I hardly use the shallower pan from this set, but the deep pan is wonderfully useful. It's stainless steel, not aluminum, so I don't worry about aluminum getting into the food. It's got a nice heavy bottom, and so is good for deepfrying and popping popcorn as well as pressure cooking. The tall capacity is nice, I can parboil a whole chicken before roasting it, without clogging the vent.
.....The complex safety features are kinda tricky to wash, but this is definitely a useful pan; it does a great job of hurry-up cooking. I am at a mile altitude, so a pressure cooker really is needed frequently in my kitchen.
.....Happy cooking, friend, I hope this info helps.

The rapid results produced by pressure cookers (a whole chicken in 20 minutes, cubed potatoes in a mere five minutes) make them a favorite among time-pressed chefs. This Splendid 2-in-1 system--which includes 4- and 6-quart pots (one deep and one shallow), a pressure cooker lid that fits both containers, a tempered glass lid, a steamer basket, and a recipe book--lives up to the billing admirably, offering such features as a visual pressure indicator, an automatic pressure release (which lets the chef release pressure without running the device under cold water), and a triple lock safety system that keeps users from inadvertently burning themselves. The Splendid pots are constructed of durable 18/10 stainless steel with aluminum-clad bottoms for superior heat conduction.
To use one of the pots, merely seal the food and liquids with the airtight lid, and then place the pressure cooker on a stove burner. The unit will bring the internal temperature up to 250 degrees F, building up pressurized steam that begins to quickly break down the fibers in the food. The method preserves the food's inherent vitamins, minerals, flavors, and aromas, while keeping it moist and succulent. Chefs who want to use the pots for traditional stovetop cooking will appreciate the glass lid, which seals tightly over the rims to trap moisture while letting users monitor the food's progress. The stainless-steel steamer basket fulfills another favorite function, holding vegetables such as broccoli or carrots over steaming water or serving as a colander insert for pasta. For added convenience, the 2-in-1 set comes with an instruction manual and recipe book. All Fagor pressure cookers carry a 10-year warranty.

We purchased this cooker based on the recommendation of a Cooks Illustrated review, and we have not been disappointed at all! The 10qt capacity is just what we need for big soups, and the 2-level pressure system offers good flexibility in terms of cooking times and tenderness. We made a fabulous, tender and juicy braised short rib dish in less than 2 hours from start to table- not a bad deal!
2008 Update: We still use this cooker and are still very happy with it! Just don't overfill or you will be picking herbs out of the pressure spout :-) I have also posted a review on TrustedOnes.com (http://www.trustedones.com/listing/view/bbSzZgRY8r3yXhaocbDfzs)

Make fresh steamed lobster in 3 minutes, or bean soup in 20 minutes. Risotto? No more standing at the stove stirring for half an hour, you can enjoy moist risotto in 7 minutes! As for ease of operation, here's how it works: load the ingredients, lock the lid in place, select the pressure, and begin cooking. When the food is done simply release the pressure and serve. Your food will be healthier because all the water soluble vitamins and minerals are retained. You'll also enjoy the tender taste of slow cooking and the natural flavors and colors of your food. But best of all? Your cooking time will be reduced by up to 70%!

I use to own an electric pressure cooker, and after many scorched meals, decided to try a stove-top model. It was the best move I could have made! 18/10 stainless, surrounding aluminum on the bottom has kept every meal scorch-free. I feel completely safe using this pressure cooker. It locks easily, and the dial indicating if the pot is at pressure and if it is at high or low pressure is fool-proof. There is nothing complicated about using this pressure cooker. I just can't say enough about this pot. I have cooked professionally, and I have cooked for many years. I would not be exaggerating if I told you that this is the best-loved piece of cookware that I own. Fagor has produced an outstanding product.

Pressure cookers are gaining momentum as the new healthy, time-saving, and energy-saving way to prepare food. While not a new method, the technology has certainly been transformed over the years to be easier and safer than ever. Constructed from 18/10 stainless steel for long-lasting durability, this 8-quart pressure cooker makes it possible to save up to 70 percent of the time and energy traditionally used in cooking rice, meat, and vegetables. The cooker's lid offers a long handle made of black heat-resistant plastic for comfortable use. A safety-lock handle, visual pressure indicator, and an automatic pressure-release setting ensure the lid won't come off unintentionally. For added convenience, the cooker provides a handy basket insert, complete with legs and a loop handle--great for draining pasta or steaming vegetables. Dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup a snap, and an instruction manual and recipe book come included. Designed for use on all heat sources, the pressure cooker measures approximately 17-1/5 by 11 by 10 inches and carries a 10-year warranty.

Fagor Splendid 10-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner Review

Fagor Splendid 10-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner

This is an excellent pressure cooker at an excellent price. I do feel they should have included a trivet and metal plate. All of the accessories are extra.
I ordered the canning rack which holds 4 pints. I don't believe it would be wise to try to can quarts in this one, but the directions were not clear. In fact, I would have given this a much higher rating if they were, but I had trouble figuring out how to use it...and one does want to follow directions where a pressure cooker is concerned. They kept referring to to pressures, hi and low. I finally realized the 6 qt model has both but not the 10 and the directions were applicable to each model. The 10 quart pressures at 15 lbs....FAST!
I once had Fagor 6 qt model and the metal was heavier than this one. However, the upside is that it is easier to lift up to pour things from it which is a plus if you're elderly as I am.
I really like they way this cooks; fast, easy to clean. It's beautifully designed pan.
There are numerous uses for non-pressure cooking too. Big enough for a stock pot, cooking spagetting for a crowd, etc etc.
I haven't canned with it. However, I plan on making a big pot of soup and canning what's left.
One reviewer mentioned that you can't fill it over 2/3 full. That is true of ANY pressure cooker. So if you are debating between a 6 quart or a 10 quart, go for the 10 quart.
There are additional accessories for this..canning rack, bucket insert (for spaghetti, etc.) I recommend getting the lid for non-pressured food and keep the pressure lid for pressure.
I don't think you will be disappointed with this product.

Presto 8-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Review

Presto 8-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker

This is a solid, basic stainless pressure cooker, that is quite a bargain at the $41.45 price (or $33 something after the $25 off $125 kitchen purchases).
Advantages:
* Easy to use flip pressure regulator for quick release of pressure
* Only has 15 lbs pressure that is adequate for normal pressure cooking
* Has handles on both sides that makes the cooker easy to carry and stable when full.
* Stainless won't interact with food product such as tomatoes.
* 8 qt. capacity gives 4 qts of capacity when cooking foaming products such as beans or lentils.
* Easier to clean than some pressure cookers I have used.
Disadvantages:
* Only cooks at 15 lbs of pressure, where some recipes call for only 10 lbs and would have to be adjusted.
* Most canning is done at 10 lbs pressure at sealevel and up to 1000 ft elevation
* I respectfully disagree that this cooker is meant for canning. It could process 3 or 4 pints in a pinch, but a 23 qt pressure cooker is the canning workhorse and will hold 19 pts or 7 qts. The manual suggests not canning in it, and it doesn't have a canning trivet included.
* It is much lighter weight than older Presto models, so I don't know if it will last as long as the old ones did.
Overall, it is a great pressure cooker for most cooking, and is a very good value.
